5 Ways WoW Forever Could Die (With Dates)
World of Warcraft: Forever opens Wednesday, November 4, at 3 p.m. Pacific. I filled in the death certificate early. Five causes of death, each with a date on it, each graded on camera on December 11: the launch queue, layering, the Skyborne share, the ban wave, and Olympus at scale. Every number comes from Blizzard's own pages or from the people who found it first, named in the body.

Unlike other versions of this MMO, Forever is going realmless by offering four types of rulesets to the community. Players can be lumped together on the normal PvE ruleset, PvP, roleplay, or (coming down the road) hardcore.

The Autopsy — the certificate
Twenty-two thousand, three hundred and twenty-nine. One player's place in the beta queue, night one, forty-eight minutes out, on the European forum5. For a beta he had paid for. World of Warcraft: Forever is born Wednesday, November fourth, three p.m. Pacific1.
I signed its death certificate today. Five causes. Each one dated. December eleventh, I read them back and grade them. Alive, or dead. Hello, living.
The Autopsy — beta night
Beta night one. Watch.
Three thousand ahead of him, and he's cheerful.
Twenty-two thousand ahead of the other guy. Forty-eight minutes. They call that early access.
The Autopsy — how a pre-mortem works
Every number here is Blizzard's, or belongs to whoever found it first. I name them. Then I date my opinion, so in six weeks you can grade it. I want this one to live. That is why the certificate is filled in now, while it can still be argued with.
Dissection 1 — the queue
Cause of death number one. The queue.
The beta opened September seventeenth4. Access came with a fifty-nine ninety-nine pack2. Twenty-two thousand people in a line, for a line they'd bought.
Dissection 1 — the Ellis read
Someone on Blizzard's Classic team, on X, that night, as Inven Global printed it6:
"This is our BETA PTR environment stack, it's not a Production stack by a long, long, long, long, long, long shot."6
Six longs. I counted. I have been dead a long time. I never saw a sentence apologise that hard.
Dissection 1 — the cap, three times
Blizzard's own podcast, episode five, recalling opening day. Listen.
A cap.
Two caps.
Three, as Kami Labs logged it8. Everyone with sixty dollars hit it.
Dissection 1 — the name queue
October twenty-seventh. Early Name Reservation opens, for anyone who'd bought a pack10. Watch.
Paid. To wait.
Mein-MMO's Cortyn logged it at six fourteen that evening: server problems, reservations postponed, no time given11. A queue, to reserve a name, to use in a queue. Of course it damn well fell over.
The Embalming Award, for a decision that looks fine from a distance and is not coming back: Early Name Reservation. Nobody got close enough to check.
Prediction 1 — the queue
Prediction one. Launch night, November fourth. Somebody posts a login queue above twenty-two thousand, three hundred and twenty-nine, on at least one North American or European ruleset. And Blizzard posts an official acknowledgement of login trouble within twenty-four hours. Graded December eleventh.
Dissection 1 — the raven's verdict
I asked the raven whether the launch servers will hold. One word. Always the same... never once wrong.
"Nevermore."
Dissection 2 — the world, in layers
Cause of death number two. The world, in layers.
Forever has no realms. Massively OP's Justin Olivetti, September twenty-second: pick a ruleset, and the whole region shares one world per ruleset12. Blizzard's own words, from the same piece: "Each ruleset functions more like a broad player ecosystem than a single traditional realm."13 A broad player ecosystem. Your realm had a name. Now it has a biome.
Dissection 2 — sorted by language
Layering: copies of each zone, spun up as the population grows. On Blizzard's own podcast, episode five, October twenty-second14, lead software engineer Ana Resendez explained the sorting. By the language you chose, not where you live16. A fuller technical episode, she promised, comes later17. Sorted by language, into a copy of a zone. I have been in a coffin. It had fewer partitions.
Dissection 2 — what the beta showed
Mid-fight on the beta. Watch the Alliance.
Contact in three seconds.
Poof.
Nobody logged off. They were filed.
Dissection 2 — always
Blizzard answered on October twenty-third22. Two fixes before launch, per Kami Labs: groups split on boats and zeppelins, and large groups split entering or leaving a capital23. Zone borders, not mentioned24. Clay Stone, associate production director, same statement: "there will always be some amount of layering that occurs within our high-capacity infrastructure."25
Always. They named the game Forever, then used the word always... about the bug. Lore-accurate.
Prediction 2 — layering
Prediction two. By December eleventh, Blizzard publishes at least one more layering change after launch. And the promised technical episode on layering still has not aired. Both halves must hold. Graded December eleventh.
The Autopsy — the promise ledger
I counted every date Blizzard has given Forever, against everything without one.
With a date. Launch, November fourth1. Name reservation, October twenty-seventh to November third10. The free launch week for invited friends, November fourth to the eleventh27. Raids, December ninth28. The Collection leaving the shop, January eleventh29. Five.
Without a date. Hardcore, "sometime after launch"30. The layering episode26. The group-layering update, promised "soon" in the beta notes61. More layering improvements, "through launch and beyond"62. Four.
Everything with a date costs money. Everything without a date is a promise. That's a pattern. The last pattern I ignored was in the water.
Dissection 3 — the elf you have to buy
Cause of death number three. The elf you have to buy.
The game comes with your subscription1. The new race does not. Skyborne come in the Heroic Pack at twenty-nine ninety-nine, the Epic Pack at fifty-nine ninety-nine, or the Collection at seventy-nine ninety-nine2. Warcraft Tavern's price list, September twelfth. Massively OP's Chris Neal reported what one fan called them, the next day32. Cash elves.
Dissection 3 — hearing the price
A top PvP creator, hearing the price for the first time. Watch.
Good question.
The elf didn't get cheaper. The frame did. Thirty dollars. Fifteen an ear.
Dissection 3 — the Jones read
Blizzard was asked why. Windows Central's Jez Corden, to lead Classic designer Tim Jones at BlizzCon33. The answer opened:
"We know that being an elf is extremely popular."33
Then: Blood Elves joined the Horde, and the faction balance flipped from sixty-forty Alliance to sixty percent Horde63. Elves are popular. Elves move populations. A sales forecast with pointed ears.
Dissection 3 — the number nobody is reading
One number nobody is reading. In the beta, everyone had the elf: access came with the Epic Pack or the Collection37. Classic Plus volunteers scanned more than a million beta characters38. Icy Veins' PopTop reported on October fourteenth: Skyborne, eighteen point seven percent, the most-chosen race overall39. Given the elf free... fewer than one in five took it. The bar was free. The bar is now thirty dollars.
Prediction 3 — Skyborne share
Prediction three. By December eleventh, Skyborne will be under ten percent of the characters on the Classic Plus census. Fewer than one in ten. If there's no public census by then, I grade it inconclusive. On camera. Graded December eleventh.
Dissection 4 — the economy, policed after the fact
Cause of death number four. The economy, policed after the fact.
Senior game designer Josh Greenfield, at the beta launch Q and A, per 80 Level on September twenty-fourth40: "Being frank, we've been probably too lenient on gold buyers, and it's been a little easy to get around some of our actions."40 Probably. Twenty-two years of gold spam in trade chat, and the official position is "probably".
He also said Blizzard would "very aggressively punish gold buyers."41 On October first, Blizzard promised a warning whenever you trade with strangers, per Warcraft Tavern's Luxrah44. The text: be wary of accepting gold from unknown or suspicious sources44. A warning about strangers. In a massively multiplayer game. The warning is about the multiplayer part.
Dissection 4 — should have known
Kaivax, September twenty-eighth, as Dexerto reported: recipients who "knew or should-have-known" the gold was illegitimate could face action too43. Two days later, a streamer handed gold on stream gave his defence. Watch.
He asks.
Knew, or should have known. He picked "neither", three times. I've seen the ban land, up close, in the beta. It takes a day. Then the guild chat goes quiet. Don't.
Blizzard's own count, closed on the beta: "over 2,100 gold-buying accounts" and "almost 1,600 gold-selling or botting accounts"45. Massively OP's Justin Olivetti noted it on October ninth45. Thirty-seven hundred, in a beta you paid to enter. Sixty dollars to get banned early. Hell of a deal.
Dissection 4 — the hold, read flat
Mid-October, a new weapon. Warcraft Tavern's Luxrah carried the full text46.
"If your account is suspected of being involved in RMT, either the selling or receiving of illicit gains, you may find your account subject to a Temporary Economy Hold."46
"This system is new. There may be false positives while things are fine tuned."48
There may be false positives. The first patch note I've seen with a side-effects label.
Prediction 4 — the ban wave
Prediction four. By December eleventh, Blizzard announces a post-launch action against gold buying with a number attached. Counted from launch day, not the beta. At least ten thousand accounts, buyers and sellers combined. Graded December eleventh.
Dissection 5 — the crowd the design invited
Cause of death number five. The crowd the design invited.
One world per ruleset. The biggest guild on it IS the server. That guild is Olympus, the streamer Asmongold's; Dexerto reported on September twenty-second that thousands of players had joined it51.
Dissection 5 — ten frames a second
Stormwind, September, the guild logging in. Dexerto quoted one player who had to log off: "His flock turned SW into a 10fps fest."52 Ten frames a second. I have watched funerals with more movement.
Dissection 5 — the Olympus read
Asmongold, September twenty-first, on who belongs in Olympus53. Watch.
Two. He counted.
...That's a joke. A good one.
Twenty thousand people took it as instructions.
A world with one server. A guild with twenty thousand people. That's a fucking design document.
Dissection 5 — the mute button
On September twenty-third a player uploaded OlympusMute to CurseForge55; it hides chat from anyone in a guild with Olympus in its name, as Dexerto reported56. An addon. To mute a guild. In two thousand four we called that "a different server".
Blizzard told the Hong Kong outlet unwire the mass gatherings were an unplanned stress test57. Hundreds of players raising torches at once had caused lag57. An unplanned stress test. No shit. They built a world where everyone is in one place, and were surprised when everyone was in one place.
Prediction 5 — Olympus at scale
Prediction five. By December eleventh, Blizzard publishes, after launch, at least one hotfix note or forum post that changes a system because of large player gatherings. Not a person. A crowd. A cap, a limit, or a performance fix with the word "players" in it, plural. Graded December eleventh. Olympus is what a realmless world does to a crowd.
Dissection 5 — the raven, again
I asked the raven whether a bigger server fixes a bigger crowd.
"Nevermore."
Same word. Still correct.
Cause of Death
Cause of Death. Provisional.
The patient is World of Warcraft: Forever, due Wednesday, November fourth, three p.m. Pacific1. Five findings. Capacity planned for a test. Layers, by language. A race sold separately. An economy policed after the fact. A crowd the design invited, then called a stress test.
Cause of death: pending. Time of death: pending. Certificate: signed October thirtieth. Graded December eleventh. I'd like it to stay pending.
Cause of Death — one sincere thing
I liked that your realm had a name. I liked that it mattered where you stood, and who stood there with you. That's the part of the old game I'd dig up first. Everything else can stay buried.
Tell me I'm wrong. You will. The comments are open, and I read everything... I have the time.
Next time
Tomorrow, an Obituary for the free race: Undead, born two thousand four60, replaced by a twenty-nine ninety-nine elf. Then Exhumed: I read every racial change from the last six weeks and count what the Undead got. Nothing. Then something.
I'll be here. Forever.
